 48-Hour Traveller’s Exemption Changed – March 20, 2007Budget 2007 doubled the value of goods that may be imported duty and tax-free by returning Canadian residents after a 48-hour absence, to $400 from $200. This measure is intended to facilitate cross-border travel by streamlining the processing of returning Canadian travellers who have made only incidental purchases while outside Canada. | How To Claim Your Sales Tax Refund for Canadian Residents Although sales to residents of Canada are not exempt from North Dakota Sales Tax, qualifying Canadian residents may obtain a refund of North Dakota sales tax payments. To qualify for a refund, purchased goods totaling $25 or more on a single receipt must be removed from North Dakota within 30 days of purchase for use permanently outside of North Dakota. Things U.S. Travelers Need to Know As of January 31st, 2008, U.S. and Canadian citizens need to present either a WHTI-compliant document, or a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, plus proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. DHS also proposes to begin alternative procedures for U.S. and Canadian children at that time. |
